Welcome to the second installment of Speak for the Week – week ending September 29, 2017!
We would like to start by giving a heartfelt thanks to Michael for traveling to Alabama to lead a street medic training. We would also like to thank everyone who attended. During this course, Michael taught the basics of first aide, what to pack in a basic medic kit, how to minimize the risk of developing PTSD, and more. This could all prove to be invaluable, life-saving information.
On Monday, Mia spoke with Lady Parts Justice League about Alabama’s candidates for state senate – Doug Jones, Luther Strange, and Roy Moore.
Aaaaaand speaking of the state senate election, as you know by now, the run-off between Strange and Moore for the Republican candidate was held Tuesday with Roy Moore as the victor. He will face Democrat Doug Jones in December. Be on the lookout for a POWER House voter guide for all upcoming races.
Tuesday was also the second in our personal safety course and it was a lot of fun! If you missed this week’s or last’s and you would like to check it out, what are you waiting for?! This is a 6 week long class that meets on Tuesdays at 6. The classes are FREE, but donations are always appreciated. As with all POWER House events, we reserve the right to refuse entry to any person for any reason.
Our 40 Days of Compassion was such a hit last year that we’re doing it again! Family Sunshine Center is the first week’s recipient. They are in need to outgrown, gently used Halloween costumes or costume pieces (the odd wig, hat, feather, boa…you get the picture)that can be put together to make for infants through teens. A donation box is on the porch of the POWER House. Even though Family Sunshine Center will be our spotlight charity for just one week, we will accept donations through October 13.
Keep an eye on the national legislature next week. The House will be begin debates on a nationwide 20 week abortion ban. Also, while it looks the GOP has once again failed in their latest attempt to repeal Obamacare and with it their attempt to reduce or eliminate coverage for birth control, defund Planned Parenthood, and undo protections for people with pre-existing conditions, don’t think the fight is over. We are bound to see another attempt soon.
