What is The P.O.W.E.R. House?

The P.O.W.E.R. (People Organizing for Women’s Empowerment & Rights) House is a historical, multi use building that houses the offices of Montgomery Area Reproductive Justice Coalition.  When we began in July of 2015, our main purpose was serving the patients of Reproductive Health Services, Montgomery’s only abortion clinic, which is located next door.  We have since branched out and operate as a community space for women, the LGBTQ* community, and other marginalized groups.

If you are visiting RHS, we are here to help you.  Here’s how:

– We offer clinic escort services for patients of RHS.  On procedure day, look for us in the bright orange safety vests that say “Pro Choice Clinic Escort”.  We are here to be a kind, friendly face in what can be a stressful environment with the protesters, and we will never, ever judge you for your decisions.

– The POWER House & it’s spacious porch are available to companions & patients to take a break from waiting inside of the clinic, to grab a smoke, use your cell phone, etc. We serve as a “shield” between you & the protesters (sometimes with our umbrellas, sometimes with using our own bodies).

– Children are not allowed inside of the clinic. If you cannot get someone to watch your small child/children, we allow companions with kids to stay inside of the POWER House while patients are inside the clinic.  We have playpens, baby swings, and toys for children of all ages.  We also have a TV and DVD player with a large selection of children’s movies. Please note that we are unable to provide babysitting services for you.

– If you are low income, coming to the clinic from out of town and need a place to stay overnight before your procedure, the POWER House may be able to help. Space is very limited and requests must be made within 24 hours of need.  Please email us for more information.

In addition to the services listed above, the POWER House assists the local community by hosting special events, educational classes, and serves as a safe space for all human rights organizations.

If you would like to volunteer with MARJCO or the POWER House, or would like to donate to keeping the house in MARJCO’s hands, please see the Donate page or Volunteer page.  Every penny we raise goes to paying the rent, utilities, and supplies for the house.  We are an all volunteer, non-profit organization and have no paid staff.  Thank you for your support!
